pee

pee
pee
Since the introduction of decimal currency in Britain in 1971 the spelling pee has come into use to represent the pronunciation of the initial letter of penny:

• May I trouble you for forty-two pee? —Ruth Rendell, 1974

• Even the fundamental human need to spend a penny costs at least 20 pee at the mainline railway termini —Times, 1999.

Lack of precedent is the only argument available to those who condemn this pronunciation and insist on the traditional (but partly anachronistic) forms penny and pence.

Modern English usage. 2014.
